In the beautiful Marmalade District in downtown Salt Lake City is this amazing restaurant called Em's. Everything about this restaurant is amazing - food, atmosphere, staff, everything!

Peaceful Uprising

I think I am a bit overdue for another posting streak. Maybe, I'll actually start posting a bit more consistently, rather than all at once for a few days and then disappearing for weeks at a time, we'll see.

Either way, here are some photos from an event that the organization Peaceful Uprising put on in order to raise support and awareness for the Tim DeChristopher trial.

Alex Ebert from Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros played at the event with a band that he met just hours before the show. Steve, who is mainly featured below (because I am slightly bias) and a fan of Alex's, put together the whole band and memorized a bunch of songs in just a week! He is an incredibly talented musician as were the others involved. It was a really great show!

I usually announce any shows that I get into on facebook, but since I deactivated my account and have since not felt the desire to activate it again, I thought I would do a post on here for it instead.

So as you can guess, I got three photos into a show! The show is in Austin, Texas at Studio2Gallery. The exhibit is for music themed photography. So if you are in the Austin area anytime between March 12-April 2, check it out! Otherwise, two of the three photos are on here. And eventually I'll post the third one.

And if anyone is in Portland who glances at this blog occasionally, I have a photo in the Newspace Gallery as well until the end of the month.

Historical Architecture

Something that most people don't know about me is that I am really really into historical architecture. It makes me all giddy to think about it. Its pretty nerdy I have been told.

I have been working on a project for a few years now and I thought I would finally post a couple of the photos. I absolutely love driving around and looking at old homes and buildings that might be historical and then researching their significance. So here are two from my project, both in Salt Lake City. In print form, they are printed as post cards with the info on the back, just to give you an idea of the look.

Unfortunately, this building was torn down just a few days ago, so I feel very fortunate to have taken this photo just a month ago, but very bummed that the building is gone. The back of the post card was obviously rewritten due to this.

I recently got back from an amazing platinum workshop in San Francisco with photographer/genius Mark Nelson. The workshop was amazing and made me wish I had lots of money to build my own darkroom for platinum printing . . . one day it'll happen.

I never had the chance to photograph in the city, but I did drive to and from San Francisco with my love which was great! And I had the chance to take a few photos along the way.

This was some tiny unincorporated town in Nevada. There was a sign, but I can't remember the name of it, I do remember that the population of the town was 26.

I had the opportunity to photograph Steve and Nicole's wedding yesterday and it was really fun. I must be honest and say that I have always had a huge fear of photographing the actual wedding day and stick to just the engagements and bridals. But it was actually fun and I really enjoyed it. It definitely helped that these two are amazing and both their families were great to work with. I think that I could even handle doing it again. Here is one photo from our shoot after the wedding. Remember these un-engagement photos? Well my brother and his girlfriend finally got engaged and then got sick of the whole wedding planning thing and eloped to Canada to get married. This was very fitting of them. A few weeks ago, they had a reception for family and friends to celebrate their marriage. It was really beautiful and they looked so happy. Finally, I am posting something that I did recently! A few weeks ago, I went to New York with the lovely man featured at the bottom of this post. It was pretty great. I ate some amazing food, visited Roosevelt Island which I had never done before, got paid to pretty much just love the "featured man" for a photo shoot, hung out with my good friend Hillary, and had Mister Softee ice cream for the first time. Amazing!

About a month ago I visited Connecticut for the first time. This and other trips are the reason behind my complete lack of posts. But hopefully this is going to change and I will finally post some photos from these trips. Here are a few from Westport, CT where I stayed with a good friend and his family. Everything about Connecticut was amazing: the architecture, the beaches, and the seafood.

I spent the first week of March in Miami for a school photo trip which was so nice because even though it was supposedly cold there, it felt great compared to Utah. Unfortunately, I didn't take a ton of photos because we were either meeting with photographers or I was driving a van without break lights and blinkers fearing for my life or I was just too out of it due to all the Dramamine that I took. But we did have the chance to walk around Little Havana and photograph for a bit. Here are a few from that.

Tattoos

I have always been interested in the meaning behind people's tattoos or what inspired them to get what they did. So I decided to do a project and photograph people's tattoos and learn the stories behind them. It was pretty cool to hear what people said and to see a variety of tattoos. Here are you few of the photos from that project.

This is my personal favorite. Never in my life have I seen a tattoo quite like this one. The writing is slightly obscured by his necklace, so if you can't read it, it says, "daddy calls me princess". Basically it is a fight against "machoness ".

This one was for a friend of hers who died in a motorcycle accident. He was planning on getting this tattoo, but never did. So she got it in remembrance of him.

At one point I wrote down what this tattoo means, but I can't for the life of me remember. But I do remember the story behind it. The model here was in Thailand and met someone who she fell in love with and they went and got this tattoo together, but I can't remember what it means, so you'll just have to use your imagination.

I am not even going to try to tell you everything that this tattoo means because as you can see, it is pretty intense. One aspect of it is that it deals with good and evil and how we have both sides in us. I can't imagine how long this would have taken to finish this.

When I asked him why he got this tattoo, he said that it is a birthmark. So I guess we'll just leave it at that.

She's a ninja.

This guy got the symbol on his stomach because he had heard that it was the most painful place to get a tattoo. He said it hurt pretty bad. When I asked him about the face of the man, he said, "I just liked him, haha, he's asian."

For a friend who died.

This one was one of those spur of the moment tattoos. It says heart, but when you look at it upside down, it says his ex-girlfriend's name which was Tagen.

This was his first sleeve and just got excited about doing it and went for it.

When I asked him about the meaning behind his stick-figure robot, he said that he hates putting meanings to tattoos. But I finally managed to get some explanation for it; I believe it is a reminder for him to not be a robot. If that's not it, its a pretty cool tattoo on its own.

I was really curious to learn what inspired him to get this tattoo, but when I asked him, all he said was, "you're not getting the story, no one is." He did tell me that it is his favorite of all his tattoos and that he got it when he was 17 and the tattoo artist wasn't going to do it for him because he wasn't old enough, but then he saw what he wanted and was all about it.

This tattoo represents all the important people in her life with each leaf representing someone.

I personally love the green tattoo with her red hair.

While we were in China, my professor was kind enough to let me borrow his Hasselblad xpan. It's a really cool camera and I secretly wish it was mine. It uses 35 mm film, but exposes about 2 1/2 frames of what a regular 35 mm camera would to create a panoramic image. So here are a few of the photos from China taken with this camera. And you can click on the photos to make them a little bigger, sorry I realize that they are tiny.

Mao Village: The Mao people are the largest minority group in China. We had lunch at one of the villager's houses and were able to experience some of their traditions. When visitors come to their village they welcome them by holding up a horn shaped thing with wine in it for you to drink as you enter their house. While we were eating, they also had girls walk around the table singing a traditional song and serving us more wine (by serving us, I mean that they hold the cup up to your mouth and wait for you to drink). If you don't drink alcohol, it's probably not the best place to visit. Can't say that I'm a fan of wine, but it was a cool experience nonetheless.

Here are a couple of pieces from a project that I am currently working on. For this project, I am illustrating Bob Dylan lyrics in which he sings about women. I still have a lot to do for it, but it definitely has been one of the my more enjoyable undertakings. I have read every song in Bob Dylan Lyrics 1962-1985 which if you have seen the book, you can imagine how long it took just to do that. Hopefully, I will have some more work from this project to post soon. But for now, here are these two. Let me know what you think so far.

The trip pretty much went like this: drove to bear lake, took this photo in route, listened to rap music, wished I was deaf, set up tents in dark, campfire (always a good time), slept, got bit by mosquitoes, face swelled up, went to the lake, rained, watched dogs try to swim, rained some more, was over trip, drove home, total time of trip=23 hours.

Recently my brother and his girl moved to Portland which is amazing for him, but sucks at the same time because we have always been super close (as brother and sister and in proximity). It is finally hitting me that the they are no longer a 45 minute drive away, so I thought it would be a good time to post these photos of the two of them. They wanted some photos of them before they moved and wanted to make sure they didn't look too much like engagement photos, hence the title.

Physics and technical writing are sucking up all of my time. It seems that I am able to find enough time to go out and photograph, but not enough to edit anything. So until all of the madness of writing papers and studying all of many models for the atom (or whatever the heck we are doing) ends and I have time to work on some recent stuff, here are a couple of photographs that I took a while back. Oh and on a side note, the writing on the napkin was done by my brother who is an aspiring writer. It took him like 30 seconds to come up with that. Pretty impressive. You'll probably need a magnifying glass to read it though.

The other day, I photographed my brother and his girl and they brought their puppies, so I took some photos of them too. It was kind of like photographing little children because my brother would stand behind me and say their names to get them to look, the same way you do with a child. It was silly. China photos at last! I thought I would start off with some photos of the Pudong airport in Shanghai. After 20 long hours in an airplane or airport and several doses of dramamine, we finally arrived in Shanghai. Right from the start, I was completely blown away by the architecture of Shanghai. It was like nothing I had seen before. Maybe that just means I need to get out more, but either way it was pretty amazing. Fortunately, our plane arrived a little early, so I was able to wander around a bit and take a few photos.
